TMO Background Mode Interview with Axios Energy & Climate Reporter Amy Harder

2018-02-19

"It can be very hard sometimes as a reporter to separate out the political statements from the science on both sides. And so I don’t want to hear an activist to say climate change caused hurricane harvey because that’s not accurate. I want to hear a scientist say, 'well it can make it worse, we are doing studies to find out if that was actually the case' so that’s what I really appreciate with Climate Feedback. [...] That’s a good example of something I would like to see more of."

At Climate Feedback, scientists encourage better science reporting. But who is listening?

"The site can be a valuable resource for journalists, says Robinson Meyer, who covers climate change for The Atlantic. Climate Feedback has reviewed three of Meyer’s stories. All received a good score. “Getting their validation is really useful,” he says. “For longer stories, often you end up parachuting into these sub-disciplines without really understanding them.” [...] And then he can show the assessment to his boss to say, “Look, I got it right,” he says. Meyer also likes reading analyses of his colleagues’ work to see if the expert reviewers confirm his own assessment of the article."

Bad news travels fast

" Lots of popular climate change articles aren’t totally credible, scientists say. Some of these articles are sensationalized very nearly to the point of inaccuracy. Others are cases of “elaborate misinformation.” A review from Climate Feedback, a group of scientists who survey climate change news to determine whether it’s scientifically sound, looked at the 25 most-shared stories last year that focused on the science of climate change or global warming."

"One key idea involves the establishment of an international non-governmental organization that would create a rating system for disinformation. There are already some similar examples in existence – Climate Feedback consults climate scientists to rate the accuracy of media articles on climate change [...]"

"That has made it more crucial than ever that journalists are able to separate fact from opinion, says Emmanuel Vincent, a project scientist at the University of California, Merced, who launched the website Climate Feedback three years ago as a forum for scientists to weigh in on the accuracy of media coverage. “Rick Perry said that climate change is due to the oceans, and a journalist may just let it go and say that’s his opinion, but it contradicts reality,” he says. “It should be the job of the journalist to say that.”"

Teaching Climate Change – The best way to teach someone about science is by encouraging them to doubt it…

2017-08-07

"Recently, a conservative think tank called the Heartland Institute sent an elaborate booklet called “Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming” to schoolteachers all over the country. Some have worried that, since it is a piece of “unscientific propaganda” containing false claims about climate science, it will “mislead tens of thousands of students.” But the scientists at Climate Feedback, a nonpartisan institution that evaluates claims about climate science in the media, had a different perspective. While giving the Heartland Institute’s report an “F” for accuracy, and thoroughly debunking its various claims, they didn’t simply tell teachers to throw the document away and forget it showed up. Instead, they said, “this book provides an opportunity for science teachers to teach their students about fallacious reasoning, as well as common misconceptions about climate science and the deceptive talking points that today floods their social media feeds.”"
